Aroostook Internet to expand coverage

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A Presque Isle-based company that provides Internet services throughout the region is set to expand its coverage.

Dan Levesque, one of the owners of Aroostook Internet of Presque Isle, said Tuesday that SJV Wireless Inc. of Fort Kent has entered into an agreement with his company, which will have Aroostook Internet take over the servicing of SJV’s wireless and dial-up customers.

Aroostook Internet provides high-speed broadband to northern and central Maine and offers DSL Internet connection in Houlton, Presque Isle and Caribou. Dial-up Internet connection also is offered, along with computer sales and repairs.

“This is a significant investment that we have made,” said Levesque, who declined to reveal the cost of the transaction. “We are excited about it.”

He added that while July 1 is the official transition date, the company already had started the transition by the end of June.

“This will be a seamless transition,” Levesque said Tuesday. “We will work very hard through the month of July to assure that.”

Levesque said that customers who have a Web site hosted by SJV Wireless will be unaffected, as SJV Wireless will continue to maintain and host those sites. All customers will be offered a new e-mail address with Aroostook Internet.

SJV Wireless customers will be able to maintain their existing e-mail addresses on a case-by-case basis for a limited time to help with the transition.

SJV Wireless has operated in Fort Kent since 1995, providing Internet service to its coverage area.

SJV President Alan Susee informed customers of the transaction on the SJV Wireless Web site.

According to his statement, the company “will be moving on to explore new opportunities in the technology industry” and will cease offering Internet service.

Susee said company officials have “worked hard to make sure that our network and customers will be taken care of by a local company right here in Aroostook County.”

“We are confident that the Aroostook Internet team has the technical expertise and more importantly the right attitude to provide the superior level of service SJV Wireless Inc. customers have come to expect,” he said in the statement.

In Fort Kent, SJV Wireless Inc. will continue to operate as ComputerOne at its facility on 134 West Main St. ComputerOne will focus primarily on computer sales and service.

Levesque said his company was excited to grow and reach out to new customers in the St. John Valley.

“This is a win-win situation for all involved,” he said Tuesday.

A big thank you to everyone at SJV for all the "extras" they have provided over the years, and not just to their customers. They have been a link to home for many of us. We are hoping that this change will work out well for everyone. Ann Sinclair

Hopefully part of the agreement includes more powerful servers so SJV.Net can now show live streaming video on their 3 webcams ;>)
